The Problem

Planning group trips can cause users to feel frustrated and overwhelmed. A lack of collaboration and communication within the group can increase stress and time spent planning.

Solution

My goal was to design a platform that is intuitive and makes it more enjoyable for travelers to plan group trips together.

THE PROBLEM

Planning group trips can be frustrating and overwhelming

As global tourism rebounds to pre-pandemic levels, planning for future trips and itineraries will be back in full swing. Planning can be stressful and time-consuming, especially when group planning lacks collaboration and communication.

DISCOVER

Competitive Analysis

I began my research by analyzing two productivity apps and two travel planning platforms. All apps show real time changes and most apps are highly customizable. Only Google Sheets and Notion include in-app communication and offline access.

Interviews

To gather more information, I conducted interviews with 7 participants, ages 20-40, who had experience with group trips of 3 or more people were interviewed on Lookback

“Researching beforehand is very important. You get to spend more time enjoying the place instead of stressing out”

— Sarah, 36

“Some people are not as active in decision making which can be worrisome.”

— Radi, 23

Key Findings

01

Making Decisions

Filtering through large amounts of information and narrowing down options can be overwhelming

02

Pain Points

Pain points included lack of communication, vague suggestions, and lost messages

03

Most-Used Tool

The most common platform used for planning was Google tool due to familiarity and real-time collaboration

04

Planner Concerns

A frequent concern for planners is worrying about crafting an itinerary that satisfies everyone.

DEFINE

How might we make decision making more collaborative and fun for people with different interests or priorities traveling together?

During interviews, I discovered that there are usually 1-3 main planners on group trips and a common pain point was a lack of communication. My goal was to design a platform that is intuitive and makes planning more enjoyable for group travelers.

User Flows

I created two user flows: Creating an account and creating a new trip

Branding

My aim was to create a platform that evoked a friendly and adventurous feeling.

High-Fidelity Prototype

To ensure our designs meet the needs of our users and our research goals, a clickable prototype was designed for 2 flows:

  1. Create an account

  2. Create a new trip

  3. Create a new task

TEST

Usability Testing

I created a high-fidelity prototype of the 3 task flows and conducted a moderated usability tests through Lookback. A total of 5 users participated in the test. 4 out of 5 were conducted virtually and one was conducted in person

FEEDBACK

Participants unanimously described going through the tasks as simple and easy to use

Areas of Improvement

  • Most users favored scrolling over using a dropdown to access additional details when entering a new task.

  • It was unclear that filling in additional details when entering a new task was optional

  • Colors looked muted on mobile devices

  • Users noted that they like being able to customize their trip with images, links, etc

Iterating after user feedback

Based on the feedback from usability testing, I aimed to focus my efforts on 3 initiatives within the proposed user flow:

  1. Allow users to scroll and see optional details when entering a new task

REFLECTION

What are the next steps?

I would like to focus on adding features that allow users to further customize their planning experience to their preferences.

Allowing users to input large amounts of information at once.

Utilizing AI tools to recommend spots or offer travel tips and reminders

Adding a map feature to help visualize itineraries and distance

Allow users to communicate through a chat or comments

Explore what's next

Enhancing the language learning experience to allow for integration of real-world experiences
